Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, is an American rapper singer. Her career as a musician actor, filmmaker and TV performer has earned the actress two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also received a Grammy Award and six other Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah was born in and lived in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita teacher who taught at Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Jr. a police officer. The couple divorced at the age of Latifah was 10 years old. Latifah grew up within the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. In her early twenties, her cousin gave Latifah the name of a stage Latifah which translates to tender and gentle in Arabic. Latifah has always been tall, standing 5'10" She was a power forward of her high-school basketball team. She sang the song"Home" from The Wiz at a school play. Latifah began beatboxing with the ladies fresh rap group. Latifah is among the first members of the Flavor Unit, which was in the beginning a group composed of MCs led by DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a sample of Queen Latifah rap Princess of the Posse. The recording was given to Yo! MTV Raps the Fab Five Freddy. The track caught the attention from Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who was signed by Latifah and, in 1988, released her debut single Wrath of My Madness.
